Mothers Day through the ages

Have you ever wondered about how Mothers Day was started? Apparently, its roots go back to the Ancient Greeks. Not only were they geniuses when it came to mathematics, architecture, engineering, the Arts and politics but they had a habit of worshipping gods and goddesses. Once a year, they would hold a spring festival to revere Rhea, the Goddess of fertility and motherhood.

Much later, Christians held their own celebration on the fourth Sunday in lent to honour the Virgin Mary. Then in the 17th century, Mothering Sunday became an annual ritual where children would pay tribute to their mothers by bringing them gifts after a special church service honouring the Virgin Mary. Employers gave live-in domestic servants a holiday on this day so they could visit their mothers.

But the modern Mothers Day was instigated by two American women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Their motivations for such a celebration were to convey messages about peace following the Civil War and to recognise the contribution all mothers make to society.  Mothers Day is now celebrated on different days in over 40 countries around the world.

It’s clear that mothers have been revered for centuries. Today, we may not hold religious festivals or take a holiday on the first Sunday in May (in Australia), but the customs of giving a gift, sharing a meal and making Mum feel special lives on.
